Staying Safe Online: Nigel Latta talks Cyber Security
When you think about cyber security, it’s easy to imagine a hacker trawling the dark web or writing lengths of code to secure information. Whilst this type of cyber-attack does exist, it’s not the only form. The truth is people need to be vigilant about many kinds of cyber security risks that each come with different levels of sophistication.
For our first Tech Talk, FletcherTech was joined by Clinical Psychologist and television host Nigel Latta ONZM. Tech Talks are led by industry leaders and are designed to inform and inspire Fletcher Building employees on a range of emerging and contemporary aspects within the technology space.
Nigel discussed the prevalence of cyber scams, strategies to combat them, how rapidly they are evolving and his own experience combatting them through his four-part television series “Nigel Latta: You've been scammed”.
Safety risks can appear as a social media link from a trusted friend. You click on the link only to find out that your friend’s account has been hacked via them clicking the link that they have sent you. They can also present as fraudulent emails, fake social media profiles, and false job or house listings. It’s also a good idea to be conscious of where you plug in your phone to charge and to avoid entering sensitive information on your device when connected to public Wi-Fi. The opportunities for scam artists to take advantage are infinite.
A major takeaway from this Tech Talk was the increasing relevance of having strong cyber security measures in place both at home and in the workplace. As the need to be online personally and professionally increases, so do the risks of being online. The more information we share, the more material scammers have access to.
Luckily, users can be proactive in staying safe online. Multifactor authentication, unique passwords, being cautious with any link sent, and using VPN’s can all help people stay safe online.
Nigel’s discussion was informative and effective. As one of our areas of expertise is Cyber Security, emphasising the importance of it to the Fletcher Building team was a strong first event offering for the tech talk series. We were thrilled to facilitate this discussion and to launch this series that highlights the future advantage FletcherTech provides.
