An AI centric Tech Talk

AI was once the topic of science fiction, now, we’re living amongst it. FletcherTech was joined by Google Fellow, Urs Hölzle for its second Tech Talk event.

The FletcherTech Tech Talk series is a quarterly event where tech industry experts engage with Fletcher Building employees on contemporary tech topics. These talks aim to inspire and broaden the understanding of current and future technologies.

"Last week was a great year for AI"

During his talk, Urs Hölzle shared valuable insights into the future of AI, the responsibilities of the tech industry, and the rapid advancements in AI technology. He highlighted how AI has evolved over the years and continues to make significant strides in shorter timeframes.

“Last week was a great year for AI”, is a well-known joke amongst those in the AI field, and an enlightening perspective for those less familiar with AI.

A notable point made during the talk was the ability of generative AI to create art and the limitations it currently possesses in reading and recognising images to the capacity that humans can. The importance of human involvement in an increasingly automated landscape was emphasised. AI needs to be trained and monitored.

Although we are already beginning to see the benefits of what AI can add to our daily lives, and the technology provides incredible tools, it is not the entire kit.

A highlight of the event was the Q+A session. Essentially, Fletcher Building team members were able to ‘Google’ their queries in real life for Urs to answer.
